人生で重要なこと。
若いときには、何かを変えて行く。
世界を変えていかなければならないと、
ではないのですが、
私たちの周りを、世界全部と言っている
のでなく、ちょっとだとしても変える
のが人生で大切なこと、というように
物語が始まります。

'The important thing in life is to make a
difference - to make a change to something,'
the girl said.
 'Ah - you mean we have to change the world?'
the boy replied.
 'No, not all of the world, we just have to
change the bit of it around us,'
the girl said. She was silent for a moment,
then she laughed at herself.

そんなことを、私（エマ）、ありきたりの
つまらないこと言っちゃったでしょ。
信じられないわ。あなたは人生で何を
しようというの？
、、（デクスターの答えを聞いて）、、
でも、世界を旅しようなんてあなたも
ありきたり。現実逃避しようとしているわ。

'I can't believe I said that. It's such a
predictable thing to say, isn't it?
But what are you going to do with your life?
What's your plan?'
 Well, my parents are coming to collect me
later today,' he told her. '
Then I'll go to France for a few weeks and
after that, maybe I'll go China.'
 'Oh, you're going travelling,' she said
wearily. 'You're predictable too. You've
got too much money, that's your problem,
Dexter. What you really mean is that you're
running away from real life.'

彼は、旅をすると心が広がり豊かになると
彼女のアクセントをまねてゆっくりと言って、
不意に彼女を上から覗きキスしました。

 'Travelling broadens the mind, Emma,'
he said slowly. He was trying to copy the
accent. Suddenly, he leaned over her and
kissed her.


Macmillan Reader 版 の
5 Intermediate なので 英語を始めてから5年生
くらいの方からも読めるのではないかと思い
ますし、日本人の学習用にも適しています。
通常版の HODDER & STOUGHTON 版を先程
ちょっと見ると単語とかも違います。

TWENTY YEARS, TWO PEOPLE と表紙にあって
Emma と Dexter の２人の軌跡です。
彼女は彼からすると心の支えではあるのですが、
恋人として見ているかや、後から頭角を現す
彼女はやはり彼のことが好きなの、友達として
か恋人としてかの関係が微妙で進むと思います。
まだ通常版（長い方）は読んでいないので、
話の結末が違ってたりしたらどうなのかなぁ
とも。また読んでみます。
